COMMUNICATION FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES
What is a research paper?
• A piece of academic writing based on its author’s original research on a particular topic.
Methods of research
Qualitative research
People thinking or point of view
Inquiry or investigation of real-life 
Quantitative research
Focus your mind on specific thing by means of statics that involve collection and study of numerical data


TITLE PAGE
It contains the ff:
• title of the research study
• the full name of the researcher(s)
• the course for which the research proposal is presented; and
• the month and year in which the proposal/final paper is completed
DEDICATION
• This is the page for dedicating the research paper to certain people or groups who have inspired the researchers while doing the thesis.
SECTION I: THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction
The main purpose is to frame the paper for its readers.
Providing:
• Brief description of the topic
• Statement as to why the topic is worth researching or why it could be found interesting
• Statement of the research objectives
• Statement of the method(s) and the scope of study.
• An overview of the rest of the paper

Statement of the Problem
• presented in statement or declarative form.
• must be reflected to your title or the readers must know the problem by just reading your topic.
• not answerable by yes or no.
Definition of Terms
• in order to understand the key terms being used in the study. 
• Terms defined should be arrange in alphabetical order and acronyms.
Methodology
• to demonstrate that you are aware of the research methods use to study the topic.
• To explain and justify the method of the data collection and analysis.
Significance of the Study
• the person/s or sector/s that will benefit from the result of the study.
• This section will state the contribution of the study and the usefulness of the study in the society.
SECTION II: RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
SECTION III: SUMMARY OF FINDINGS,
        CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
• This describes the problem, research design, and the findings (answer to the questions raised). The recommended format is paragraph form instead of enumeration form.

Conclusion
• These are usually general statements made based on the findings. 
• This part does not contain number/percentage or statistical values.
• These are brief, generalized statements in answer to the general and each of the specific sub-problems.
Recommendations
• The recommendations or suggestions offered by the study.
• Based on the findings and conclusions of the study.
• May be specific or general or both.
• May include suggestions for further studies.
Reference
Citation
• Is a way of giving credit to individuals for their creative and intellectual works that you utilized to support your research
• It can also be used to locate particular sources and combat plagiarism
• Include the author's name, date, location of the publishing company, journal title.
Citation styles
• APA (American Psychological Association) is used by Education, Psychology, and Sciences
• MLA (Modern Language Association) style is used by the Humanities.
• Chicago/Turabian style is generally used by Business, History, and the Fine Arts.

Chicago/turabian style
includes two systems for citations: a notes and bibliography system and the author-date system.

Citing an academic works: thesis or dissertation
Structure:

To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information.

To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas.

To avoid PLAGIARISM by quoting words and ideas used by other authors
Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when you borrow another's words (or ideas) and do not acknowledge that you have done so.

Plagiarism is a very serious offense. If it is found that you have plagiarized -- deliberately or inadvertently -- you may face serious consequences.
