CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM
AND ITS BACKGROUND
Background
of the study
One of the social issues in the Philippines is the
early age pregnancy. According to WordVision.org (2016), Philippines has the
highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations, 1 out of 10 young Filipino women (15-19 years old) is already a mother
or pregnant with a first child. Often in this age the girls are still studying.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (2014) shows 24 babies are
delivered by teenage mothers every hour. Not only pregnancies, increasingly contacted
diseases are very rampant in the country. In May 2017, there were 1,098 new HIV
antibody zero-positive individuals reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry
of the Philippines (HARP), most (95%) were male. The median age was 28 years
old (age range: 2 year - 67 years). More than half belong to the 25 - 34 year
age group while 30% were youth aged 15 - 24 years (Department of Health ,2017).
According to Philstar.com (2013) organized by UNIFPA
(2013), one root causes teenage pregnancy is lack of education. Adolescents and
youth must be given age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education to
develop the required knowledge and skills that will help them protect their
health throughout their lives. Acquiring sex education in secondary education
system openly helps the young minds to develop and learn more the advantages
and most specially the risks in dealing sexual matters.
One of the bases in pushing through this study is
the documentary featured in GMA, Reel Time entitled “Hinog sa Pilit ” aired July 23, 2016. The documentary contains the
real situation of the teenagers aging 14-19 years old with child or children.
In an interview, a young woman said that “when
we were using condom at that time this will not happened, we are not aware as
well as we don’t have knowledge where to
get and how to use the condom.” The documentary shows that young minds are
exposed to premarital sex and increasing number teenage pregnancies due to lack
of awareness and knowledge on sexual matters.
This study made possible because of the observations
and concerns of the common issue in our country, teenage pregnancy which brings
our country as the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Asia (PhilStar, 2016).
This aims to help and improve the students in understanding the importance of
having sex education as a subject in secondary school.
The Problem
The main concern of the study is to identify the
different perception of the students in implementing sex education in the
school and to know the different advantages
and disadvantages of having sex education as a subject in secondary education
school year 2017-2018.
Statement
of the Problem
The
study also aims to answer the following questions:
1. What
are the different demographic profile of the students based on;
1.1 age
1.2 sex
and
1.3 grade
level
2. What
is the perception of the students on implementing sex education as a subject in
secondary education?
CHAPTER V
SUMMARY CONCLUSION
AND RECOMMENDATION
SUMMARY
The goal of this study is to answer and identify the
different perceptions of sex education to the students and its advantages and
disadvantage when implementing such subject in the campus.
CONCLUSION
About 146 students are involved and participated in the
study by answering the survey-questionnaire. Based on our data gathering we can
conclude that different students have different perception in implementing sex
education in the school. According to our data gathered almost all of the
students strongly agree that school
based sex education would decrease the rate of pre- marital pregnancy, this is
the top perception of the students when the school will implement sex
education.
On the other hand, they have different opinion in
terms of the advantages and disadvantages of sex education. The advantages of
sex education in the school are as follows: out of 146 students, 99 said that
sexual abuse in children will be avoided. 67 out of 146 students said that
teenage pregnancy can be avoided. Out of 146 students, 81 said that children
can be transformed into responsible adults. And lastly, some students think
that this could help to gain respect to each other and have mature understanding.
While, the disadvantages that the respondents think in implementing sex education
are as follows: out of 146 students, 46 said that sex education at school may
be odds with the religious ideologies. Out of 146 students, 46 think that
student may still or get embarrassed or excitable by subject matter. Another
thing, 67 out of 146 students said that teachers appointed to this are mostly
untrained as for how should may go about teaching sex education to students.
Other answers are as follows: students may not be comfortable with the topic
and lastly students will be triggered and try to do such thing (applying the
real life situation).
RECOMMENDATION
For the school, it is recommended to apply this
research to help students understand more the importance of hygiene and sex.
For the Department of Health, it is recommended to support this study to lessen
the probability of HIV and aids in the
society. To the department of education and teachers, it is highly recommended
to support this study in order to build up students on what’s ahead. And
lastly, for the future researchers who want to continue this study, the
following is recommended: putting high
effort and time in conducting the study is highly appreciated. The future
researcher should see an actual event and collect more actual stories and
testimonies especially that can help strengthen the importance of implementing
sex education in the school or campus. Observing the students in terms of their
performance is highly encouraged to be implemented.
